TUNE OF THE WEEK: BZRP MUSIC SESSIONS, VOL. 53 (SHAKIRA, bizarrap)
(DALE PLAY RECORDS, 2023)
The first few weeks of the year are generally pretty quiet as far as the music industry is concerned.
Who releases a song at the deadest time of the year (outside of Christmas)? Shakira, that’s who.
Argentinian super producer Bizarrap dropped his latest BZRP Session alongside the Hips Don’t Lie singer this week. Shakira doesn’t hold back as she takes aim at her ex, football player Piqué, who ended their 11-year relationship last year after allegedly cheating.
There’s a lot to unpack here.
Over Bizarrap’s EDM beats, the Colombian superstar unleashes her anger towards him, from being left to deal with the media to the Spanish tax authorities.
Piqué’s new 22-year-old girlfriend, Clara Chia is also in the firing line. Shakira name-drops: “Clara-mente no es como suena, tiene nombre de persona buena” (“Clearly it’s not how it sounds, she has the name of a good person.”)
In the chorus, she pays homage to her inner strength, “una loba como yo no está pa’ tipos como tú”, which translates to “a she-wolf (referencing her 2009 hit) like me is not for guys like you.”
The music video clocked up 63m views in 24 hours breaking YouTube records as the biggest debut for a Latin song in the platforms history.
“Las mujeres ya no lloran; las mujeres facturan” (“Women don’t cry anymore; women make money”), she sings. They also make sizzling breakup bangers.
Is this the best Bizarrap session yet? Let me know in the comments.
